FAQ

Do I have to vote?

Yes! It is compulsory for all Australian Citizens to vote in Federal Elections, which occur approximately every 3 years.

If you do not vote or register to be on the Electoral Role, then you will be fined!

When is the Federal Election in 2022?

Good question, we don't know yet.

The Election date will be 'called' by Parliament 3 weeks beforehand.

The Electoral Role will close 7 days after the date has been called, so you must be enrolled and have up to date details by this time.

In 2022, the election will be any time before the end of May. Elections are always held on a Saturday.

How does voting work on the day?

The Australian Electoral Commission has lots of information here explaining how voting works.

How do I know who to vote for?

This can be tricky too!

We've collected some great tools we've found helpful for young people deciding on how to vote.

Try Vote Compass by ABC (https://votecompass.abc.net.au/) which shows you how your views align with candidates running in the election.

We also like They Vote For You (https://theyvoteforyou.org.au/) which shows you how all current MPs have historically voted on issues you care about.

General election campaign information and messaging from individual candidates can be found on the websites of candidates.

What if I can't vote on Election Day?

There are two alternative options to voting 'on the day'.

The first is postal voting. There are lots of circumstances which will make you eligible for postal voting (where your ballot paper will be sent in the mail to your address). You must register in advance to be able to access this option, you can see all criteria and register here: https://www.aec.gov.au/Enrolling_to_vote/Special_Category/general-postal-voters.htm

The second is to attend an Early Voting Centre in the days leading up to the election. For example, if you have a shift at work on Election Day, this might be the best option for you. You don't have to register in advance for this. We will post a link to the Early Voting Centres in WA here when they become available.

Finally, if for some reason there is an emergency or urgent circumstance that prevents you from voting on Election Day (even if you had planned to do so), the AEC will follow up with you after the Election Day and you can disclose this reason to them.
