There are more than 100,000 temporary election jobs available across Australia. The application process isn't super simple, but it's worth it given there are so many roles available!

You must create an account with the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) before registering your interest, to work you must be an Australian Citizen.

Register Your Interest

You will need to have 2 referees, answer questions about your skills, submit bank, tax & superannuation details in your submission. It will take 15-20 minutes to do.

The AEC will get in touch with you via phone or email if you are successful, make sure you answer any phone calls and check your spam folders in case you miss it!

What jobs or roles are available?

There are a whole range of different roles available.

Most young people or first-time election workers will rotate through a variety of different roles throughout the day.

You might be a Ballot Box Guard (making sure people put their ballot papers in the right boxes, and that votes are not tampered with), or ticking off peoples' names on the Electoral Role as they enter.

How much money will I make?

It depends! You can see the hourly rate for different roles at the AEC website here: https://www.aec.gov.au/employment/working-at-elections/positions.htm

Most roles require you to work 10-12 hours of the day, from when the Polling Booth opens to when all the votes have been counted late at night.

If you are receiving Centrelink payments, this may affect your payment amount.

Can I work with my friends?

If you apply alongside your friend, preference the same polling booths and request to be paired together when asked in the Registration of Interest form.

There's no guarantee, but it's worth a shot!

When do I have to apply by?

The sooner the better! As we don't know when the election will be called, it's hard to know what the exact Election Date will be.

It's best to get your application in early to ensure your preferences are met (for roles and locations).

What will I need to apply?

Great question.

You will need to answer some questions about your skills and past work experience.

You will also need to name two referees (this could be a teacher, your boss, a trusted adult in your life) to vouch for your character.

The form will also ask for your bank, tax and superannuation details. If it's your first time applying to w, ask a trusted adult for help with this part.
